Temar stated in a Lancaster Online news segment, "I saw a suspicious car and I l...

Rescuing the Rescuer

Image
We all need help from someone. More often than not the people we rely on are specially qualified for the task. It could be due to education, experience, special skills, maturity, credentials & certifications, or just earned trust over a period of time. A combination of these factors come into play with Austen MacMillan and his therapist Jason Piquette as their three year relationship continues to grow strong. The two were in a session together using the family pool as part of that day's therapy exercise when the unthinkable happened. Jason went under water and did not come back up. Suddenly a twelve year old boy who relies heavily on the help of this grown man is faced with a role reversal requiring quick thinking and action for survival to be an option. Jason & Austen sharing their story Austen, though panicking, managed to dive under and pull Jason to the surface and move him over to the sunbathing shallows making sure the man's head stayed above water. He then exite...

Taking Time to Stop

There isn't a lot of good news coming out of Maui this year as a record setting fire consumed much of the beautiful island devastating businesses, homes, and historic sites alike. However (and as usual) if you look closely you will find endless stories of people helping one another out especially in times of tragedy. Steven, not having noticed inquires back to her, "What" ? to which she emphatically exclaims, "the fire, its in the bushes!" The Smith's thanking the Pickering's With video rolling to capture the emotional moment, Steven jumps out of the car and grabs a water-hose from the side of the home and begins dousing the flames despite the ri...

Rescuing A Neighbor In Trouble

Image
Normal neighborly kindness comes in the form of giving a cup of sugar to that mom who is in the middle of baking and realizes she is out. Or maybe its checking their mail while they are vacationing and keeping an eye on the house. Still another might be mowing their yard or helping with trash cans. These gestures are all kind and loving in their own way building a sense of true community. But what if your neighbor is in harms way and being attacked? What if the only option is to risk your own life or physical injury by coming to their aid? Would you hesitate? Grant and Mason reunited after the attack Thankfully Grant Brown, a nineteen year old soon to be military recruit, did not stop to think about his own safety when he heard the screams of six-year-old neighbor Mason Lindeman. The little boy had been playing on his own driveway near the road with two other friends when a pit bull got loose and went on the attack. The dog honed in on Mason, tackling him to the ground, clamping h...

Surviving Underwater for 8 Minutes

Image
If you are like most, you clicked this article because of its incredible title. How could that be true? Surely no one holds their breath that long. What kept them under the surface for 8 full minutes? Further details are needed to satisfy our curiosity. As the source content below will show this was a deeper dive (no pun intended) that did not disappoint as it renders the title somewhat tame in comparison to its amazing details. Turns out a 12 year old boy while vacationing at a South Carolina resort got stuck in a lazy river pool drain after unwisely removing its cover with the help of a friend. With the cover removed the force of the pumps suction grew all the stronger, capturing the young man's foot, making it impossible to surface and retrieve air.  Skursky recounting the rescue attempt His friend (a fellow 12 year-old) immediately began pulling on his trapped buddy in attempt to help but ultimately the force of the suction was too much. After 90 seconds the friend yells ...

Drone Pilot Hero

Image
Drones are all the rage these days. They use them to inspect for roof damage. Youtubers have them to get that perfect aerial shot for their travel channels. Several traditional fireworks shows have pivoted to drone formats as they can offer a less noisy light show with impressive choreography. Even hobbyists and casual users that just want to learn how to pilot these airborne marvels are becoming more and more common. One such teen hobbyist, Josh Logue from Denver, decided to go for a flight when he spotted something strange on camera, "I just thought it was a shadow or a mud puddle on the ground from all that rain recently. And then when I saw a car in it, I'm like oh...that's a sinkhole." Josh locating the anomaly To spot a sinkhole is unique on its own as they are not very common. But for there to be a car in the hole is quite a bit more interesting and this one, had people inside. In fact the couple in the vehicle had already tried calling 911 in their upside-dow...

Modern Day David & Goliath Showdown

Image
We all know the Bible story of David & Goliath. David, a young teen tending to the adult men in the Israelite army, overhears the taunts from the enemy giant insulting them and their God. David, indignant with righteous rage and disappointed that the actual adults are just taking these jabs without response, volunteers to face this Philistine filth. Armed with a simple slingshot and a handful of rocks he easily dispatches the otherwise terrifying warrior, much to the praise and accolades of the army of men behind him. While this modern version of the story has no biblical implications there are several threads of correlation. Owen Burns, a thirteen year old boy overheard his 7 year old sister screaming in their backyard which borders a wooded area.  Owen with mom, dad, and trusty slingshot A 17 year old male (a giant in comparison) decided to grab the little girl with the intent to kidnap and harm the child prompting big brother Owen into action, grabbing (you guessed it)...

Comfort During Chaos

Image
One minute you are sitting at an intersection waiting your turn, on the way to the gym for a morning work out, the next minute you are two lanes over in a pile of rubble with blood everywhere and in shock from what must have been an impact. Loud noises of metal against metal, a transformer on the nearby electric pole blows up and your tongue doesn't seem to work or want to form words after your teeth nearly bit it in half. Imagine all of that happening in a split second. Even as an adult the chaos of it all would be jarring, confusing, and downright scary. Now imagine being a sixteen year old teenager who probably doesn't even know where his insurance card is or what accident protocols to follow. Yancey & Cole recounting their experience That's exactly what happened to Hudson Yancey just a few weeks ago as another motorist smashed into his vehicle. In addition to biting through a large portion of his tongue his teeth also went through part of his lower lip plus he suff...

Bus Driver Saves Student's Life

Image
Ginger Maxville Young children tend to put almost anything in their mouths. Perhaps its a right of passage and a way of experiencing & exploring the world around them with more than just one of their five senses. Perhaps its just a fidgety behavior done out of sheer boredom. Whichever is the case, that kind of behavior can sadly lead to very scary and life threatening situations as choking can be common. If it fits in their mouth, it most likely can choke them. So when an adventurous five year old student on Ginger Maxville's bus started a commotion, her first assumption was the he was playing around stating, "I thought he was just teasing me and I thought he just wasn't following my instructions about sitting down." The child's persistence along with his sister explaining that "he had a coin stuck in his throat" caused the bus driver to 'switch gears' and think through the life saving classes from years past. After pulling the bus over into...

Diving In Without Hesitance

Image
A normal traffic accident is scary enough. But add high speeds, a bridge over water, and an ejected baby into the mix and you have a scene straight out of a horror movie. A multi-car collision occurred on the Ocean City, Maryland bridge leaving a pickup truck (pictured below) turned on its side hanging over the edge. The velocity of the impact caused an 18 month old little girl to eject from the vehicle and into the water. Jonathan Bowers, a fellow motorist on the bridge, witnessed the jaw dropping event and quickly went to the railing to look into the bay below. Upon doing so he recalled, "when I looked over, I saw the car seat, some other items, and about six feet away was a little girl. She was on her back, completely floating, head above water, arms moving and legs kicking."  Realizing her ability to stay afloat would not last long Jonathan jumped over the railing plunging two stories down into the bay waters, swimming after the child. Upon retrieving the young one, Mr. B...

Brave Rescue on NYC Subway

Image
Twenty three year old, Cornell student Bryce Demopoulos was recently caught on MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) camera helping a man in need. As the student entered the subway platform awaiting his connection that would usher him to his summer job at Weill Cornell Medicine, he observed a man stumble off the platform and onto the tracks. Initially Bryce assumed the man would just hop right back out but it became clear as the man shouted that he was not capable of doing so without help.  So without thinking, Demopoulos jumped into the subway rail line with an oncoming train headed for the pair in effort to assist the fallen man back onto the platform. "I didn't really think about it too much. I saw somebody who was obviously in trouble and I was in a position to help him. It didn't really occur to me that it was dangerous in the moment - I just feel like I had the responsibility to just hop in and help him when he needed it." It was not until footage of his h...
