Are You Angry & Frustrated?

Image
I admit it. I struggle with anger and frustration on a fairly constant basis. I think most men do although I know its not relegated to just us guys alone. Part of the prevalence might be tied to the fact that its one of the only emotions apart from happiness that men are allowed to feel. Most emotions outside of these two get you made fun of with descriptions like "soft" or "pansy" being hurled your way. So we tend to embrace anger early on and maybe even use it as a one-tone expression of many other emotions like a camouflaged tarp of sorts. Doing this allows us to hide the root of the true issue and avoid the potential assault of your manliness. It gets worse, at least for me. On some level I have managed to embrace my anger and frustration as mostly justified and a badge of honor. Allow me to elaborate and invite you to introspectively decide whether or not you can relate. First off, anger in and of itself is not a sin. Verses like Ephesians 4:26 state to ...

Walking The Walk

Image
As Christians we rightfully make bold claims. Our Father created the entire universe, all of the earth, then decided to create us, AND to make us in His image. Sure, we live in an imperfect world but He is mightier than the fallen state of affairs. To prove it He sent His son to ultimately fix what we so horribly broke. Our identity in Christ also allows a certain boldness you don't typically find in the average non-believer or other religious follower. He overcame death that we might live. He gives us a new identity that we can approach the throne of God like children rather than broken beggars riddled with sin. But what happens when our boldness is challenged and life drops an atomic bomb on us? Do we fold and run? Do we become consumed with anxiety and resentment? Do we just talk the talk or can we actually walk the walk? Those questions are hard for me to answer personally and quite honestly I am not inviting a bomb to land on my lap as a means of testing. However, that exact ...

Mistaken Text Leads To Marriage

Image
There is an expression that says, "a coincidence is God's way of remaining anonymous." Have you ever felt like that? Most people experience a wide range of coincidences where things just seem to work out in an unexpected but pleasant way. But when it comes to the story of Brenda Rivera and Isiah Stern the coincidence was not a small one and it actually started with a Bible verse. You see Rivera was trying to send a friend an encouraging scripture via text quoting from Philippians 2:  do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourself. Wrong number leads to marriage & kids After hitting 'send' the message actually went to Stern as Rivera typed her friends number but was one digit off. Seeing the scripture on his phone from an unknown number he couldn't help but reply so Isiah said, "Amen to that. Who is this?" Soon the mistake led to conversations. Conversations led to a growing trust. Trust...

The Roar of the Father

"My daddy can beat up your daddy," was a common phrase in the school yard at recess time when many of us were growing up. For some reason it was important to show strength was on your side even if it didn't come directly from you. This boast implied that though I might not be able to handle you, my dad can handle you and he can even handle your dad, so watch out! Earthly fathers if they are doing their job correctly allow you to securely boast about them because they supply a safe home, play the role of protector and provider which creates that sense of confidence. It didn't matter that these claims were never played out, it mattered that you could boldly stand before any foe and utter those scary words to make them think twice about coming at you. Shirer shares the Lion King analogy Priscilla Shirer has a talk online that takes this relatable concept a step further drawing parallels to the movie The Lion King and our Heavenly Father. She recounts the scene where Si...
