Rescuing the Rescuer

Image
We all need help from someone. More often than not the people we rely on are specially qualified for the task. It could be due to education, experience, special skills, maturity, credentials & certifications, or just earned trust over a period of time. A combination of these factors come into play with Austen MacMillan and his therapist Jason Piquette as their three year relationship continues to grow strong. The two were in a session together using the family pool as part of that day's therapy exercise when the unthinkable happened. Jason went under water and did not come back up. Suddenly a twelve year old boy who relies heavily on the help of this grown man is faced with a role reversal requiring quick thinking and action for survival to be an option. Jason & Austen sharing their story Austen, though panicking, managed to dive under and pull Jason to the surface and move him over to the sunbathing shallows making sure the man's head stayed above water. He then exite...

Rescuing A Neighbor In Trouble

Image
Normal neighborly kindness comes in the form of giving a cup of sugar to that mom who is in the middle of baking and realizes she is out. Or maybe its checking their mail while they are vacationing and keeping an eye on the house. Still another might be mowing their yard or helping with trash cans. These gestures are all kind and loving in their own way building a sense of true community. But what if your neighbor is in harms way and being attacked? What if the only option is to risk your own life or physical injury by coming to their aid? Would you hesitate? Grant and Mason reunited after the attack Thankfully Grant Brown, a nineteen year old soon to be military recruit, did not stop to think about his own safety when he heard the screams of six-year-old neighbor Mason Lindeman. The little boy had been playing on his own driveway near the road with two other friends when a pit bull got loose and went on the attack. The dog honed in on Mason, tackling him to the ground, clamping h...

Modern Day David & Goliath Showdown

Image
We all know the Bible story of David & Goliath. David, a young teen tending to the adult men in the Israelite army, overhears the taunts from the enemy giant insulting them and their God. David, indignant with righteous rage and disappointed that the actual adults are just taking these jabs without response, volunteers to face this Philistine filth. Armed with a simple slingshot and a handful of rocks he easily dispatches the otherwise terrifying warrior, much to the praise and accolades of the army of men behind him. While this modern version of the story has no biblical implications there are several threads of correlation. Owen Burns, a thirteen year old boy overheard his 7 year old sister screaming in their backyard which borders a wooded area.  Owen with mom, dad, and trusty slingshot A 17 year old male (a giant in comparison) decided to grab the little girl with the intent to kidnap and harm the child prompting big brother Owen into action, grabbing (you guessed it)...

Rescued From A Tornado

Image
A K-9 police dog and human officer duo already face plenty of challenges on your ordinary day. K-9's are usually dispatched to drug scenes or when a bad guy is on the run both of which are high risk and put lives in jeopardy. But imagine surviving all of that and working together for 6 years when nature suddenly becomes your enemy. That is exactly what happened to officer Joel Nitchman and K-9 partner Roni at the Deer Park Police headquarters. Officer Nitchman & K-9 Roni The pair had just returned to the station after a training session where Nitchman went inside to take care of some administrative tasks. Per usual, he left Roni in the safety of the car equipped with the proper kennel accommodations. Shortly after entering the building the roaring sound of an oncoming tornado rang through the hallways and Joel knew he had to act fast. A vehicle is not the place to be during high winds that can exceed 100 miles per hour. The last thing officer Nitchman wanted was for his buddy ...

Diving In Without Hesitance

Image
A normal traffic accident is scary enough. But add high speeds, a bridge over water, and an ejected baby into the mix and you have a scene straight out of a horror movie. A multi-car collision occurred on the Ocean City, Maryland bridge leaving a pickup truck (pictured below) turned on its side hanging over the edge. The velocity of the impact caused an 18 month old little girl to eject from the vehicle and into the water. Jonathan Bowers, a fellow motorist on the bridge, witnessed the jaw dropping event and quickly went to the railing to look into the bay below. Upon doing so he recalled, "when I looked over, I saw the car seat, some other items, and about six feet away was a little girl. She was on her back, completely floating, head above water, arms moving and legs kicking."  Realizing her ability to stay afloat would not last long Jonathan jumped over the railing plunging two stories down into the bay waters, swimming after the child. Upon retrieving the young one, Mr. B...

Brave Rescue on NYC Subway

Image
Twenty three year old, Cornell student Bryce Demopoulos was recently caught on MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) camera helping a man in need. As the student entered the subway platform awaiting his connection that would usher him to his summer job at Weill Cornell Medicine, he observed a man stumble off the platform and onto the tracks. Initially Bryce assumed the man would just hop right back out but it became clear as the man shouted that he was not capable of doing so without help.  So without thinking, Demopoulos jumped into the subway rail line with an oncoming train headed for the pair in effort to assist the fallen man back onto the platform. "I didn't really think about it too much. I saw somebody who was obviously in trouble and I was in a position to help him. It didn't really occur to me that it was dangerous in the moment - I just feel like I had the responsibility to just hop in and help him when he needed it." It was not until footage of his h...
