Modern Day David & Goliath Showdown

 We all know the Bible story of David & Goliath. David, a young teen tending to the adult men in the Israelite army, overhears the taunts from the enemy giant insulting them and their God. David, indignant with righteous rage and disappointed that the actual adults are just taking these jabs without response, volunteers to face this Philistine filth. Armed with a simple slingshot and a handful of rocks he easily dispatches the otherwise terrifying warrior, much to the praise and accolades of the army of men behind him. While this modern version of the story has no biblical implications there are several threads of correlation. Owen Burns, a thirteen year old boy overheard his 7 year old sister screaming in their backyard which borders a wooded area.

A 17 year old male (a giant in comparison) decided to grab the little girl with the intent to kidnap and harm the child prompting big brother Owen into action, grabbing (you guessed it) a slingshot. Despite admitting to having very little practice, his first projectile hit the assailant square in the (guessed it again) forehead. This high velocity blow to the cranium caused the attacker to let go of the girl out of sheer shock from the unexpected and painful impact. As Owen's sister ran to safety he took aim and sent a second rock hurling for good measure, striking the attacker again but this time squarely in the chest. This proverbial giant had enough, just as his Goliath counterpart. The suspect took off running and was soon found & arrested at a nearby gas station with injuries consistent with having two rocks impact his forehead and chest.

When the Alpena County Police Chief was asked what advice he would give to others who might find themselves in a similar situation he said, "Fight. Do everything you can. Bite the hand that is holding your mouth. Stomp on their feet. Kick them in the shin. Do whatever you can to fight and if your mouth is free, scream as loud as you possibly can." Thankfully this little girl did her part by screaming and big brother Owen did his part by coming to the rescue. The family is now celebrating their daughters 8th birthday instead of grieving at her funeral due to the quick thinking and action of this brave young boy.

Uplifting Inspiration, Steve Hartman

Though not completely based on Mr. Hartman and his efforts to, as he states, "put a spotlight on kindness," Uplift Media certainly takes some inspiration and aligns perfectly in the undertaking. In fact, when searching for good news stories, his videos come up more often than any other source.
