Comfort During Chaos

One minute you are sitting at an intersection waiting your turn, on the way to the gym for a morning work out, the next minute you are two lanes over in a pile of rubble with blood everywhere and in shock from what must have been an impact. Loud noises of metal against metal, a transformer on the nearby electric pole blows up and your tongue doesn't seem to work or want to form words after your teeth nearly bit it in half. Imagine all of that happening in a split second. Even as an adult the chaos of it all would be jarring, confusing, and downright scary. Now imagine being a sixteen year old teenager who probably doesn't even know where his insurance card is or what accident protocols to follow.

Yancey & Cole recounting their experience

That's exactly what happened to Hudson Yancey just a few weeks ago as another motorist smashed into his vehicle. In addition to biting through a large portion of his tongue his teeth also went through part of his lower lip plus he suffered from a concussion. Thankfully a nearby gas station attendant, Lamarris Cole, heard the loud impact and blown transformer and went outside to check out the scene. He soon witnessed a confused boy, unable to speak, or even make sense of what just happened and came to his aid. Cole took care of talking to mom and directing her where to come. He helped the young man calm down and assured him that the accident was not his fault. He even offered a hug upon seeing just how scared the teen had become and the touching gesture was caught on the gas station security camera.

"I was freaked out. I felt like a little kid. I felt like there was so much responsibility in that moment that I didn't know what to do or how to handle it. And really Cole was there to calm me down and really he did everything for me," explains Hudson to an Inside Edition reporter. "Literally I keep calling him an angel. I saw this angel run along beside him and give him a hug when I couldn't be there...that is when I said I need to find this guy because he did an awesome deed," stated an emotional mother of the young teen. "He is always going to be in my little gratitude box," says Lamarris as a reminder of what happened and of Hudson himself. This unsung hero further explained to reporters that what he did is just what you are supposed to do in these types of situations. We salute this humble hero and hope there are more out there like him
