JJ Watt Retires With Loving Sendoff

Watt tearing up during tribute
If you know nothing about the NFL and its superstars, one would only have to Google JJ Watt and the first option is a Wikipedia bio that states, "Considered to be one of the greatest defensive linemen of all time, Watt received the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award three times in his first five seasons." It goes on from there to list countless other accolades including a franchise record when playing for the Houston Texans for number of sacks and forced fumbles.

If that kind of research isn't convincing enough consider his surprise retirement video. In the last team meeting, Cardinals Defensive Coordinator Vance Joseph takes time out to share a tribute video and to make sure the team understand this is Watt's last game. As the touching memorial piece gets going you see the likes of his two NFL brothers TJ and Derek Watt, Aaron Rogers, Peyton Manning, Dak Prescott, Tom Brady and many others taking time out to honor the veteran of the sport. Tom hilariously points out, "Man, you were a pain in my ass for a long time. It was an honor to share the field with you," making reference to the many times that Watt played against Brady and made it very tough on him to progress down the field, much less win the game.

Perhaps most touching though are the cameos from Watt's own parents and loving wife. Mom emotionally states, "JJ before you were born, we had really big dreams for you and high hopes but, boy you kind of blew those out of the water on your own." Dad chimes in afterward stating, "I got to be a big part of it for your first journey back in the day when I was your coach. And its been a pleasure to watch you ever since." However, the best quote that likely sums up Watt most accurately and wonderfully comes toward the end as his wife, Kealia Watt (who is holding baby Koa) states, "It has been such an honor to watch you work your ass off these past years. And do whatever you needed to do to be the best. And you've always been so generous and kind and loving to everybody around you, and you never forgot who you are."

JJ sat tearfully through the whole thing at times with his whole body erupting with emotion that could not be contained and who could blame him? To put together a career that gained the respect of your teammates, coaches, and opponents alike all while making your family proud and staying true to yourself not letting the fame of celebrity change you, is indeed a valiant thing to get emotional about. The world could use more professional athletes like him. Humble, kind, and amazingly talented making it a pleasure to watch him on and off the field. Uplift salutes JJ and his legacy. We wish you the very best in your next chapter and look forward to how you continue to bless the world around you.
